Combining the Written and Verbal Media of Language in Therapy

Divorce Adjustment for Children Through Programmed Distance Writing

Pages 55-72 | Published online: 17 Oct 2008

Abstract

In this article particular focus is given to demonstrating how combining the written (Programmed Distance Writing) and the Verbal (conversation between a child and his/her parent(s) at home and in the professional office) can be used synergistically to create change. The idea that change is generated by language both through internal dialogue and conversation with others is presented. An overview is provided of what programmed distance writing is, specifically the Divorce Adjustment for Children Workbook, and how it can be used effectively with binuclear families.
