Young Children's Adjustment to Their Parents' Divorce as Reflected in Their Drawings

&
Pages 47-70 | Published online: 12 Oct 2008

Abstract

The article presents an analysis of six family pictures drawn by young children (4-6) from a non-clinical population, whose parents were divorced during the last three years.

An analysis of the drawings shows that children who are in their mothers' custody, and have an ongoing and stable relationship with their fathers, experienced a natural process of crisis followed by adaptation to the divorce.

The article describes the children's perception of the divorce crisis according to the stages of their development and utilizes the principles of the analysis of children's drawings as a diagnostic tool.

The summary discusses the research and clinical implications of the study.
