Digging Up Archaeological Information

Pages 1-20 | Received 14 Dec 2004, Accepted 14 Jan 2005, Published online: 02 Oct 2008

Abstract

Information about archaeological sites in the United States is difficult to find for multiple reasons including the large number of publications, the proliferation of gray literature in archaeological publication, the interdisciplinary nature of archaeology, the lack of site name normalization, and inadequate electronic resources. Current archaeological information resources including free and subscription databases, pathfinders, and organizational Web sites are reviewed. Suggestions for the improvement of current resources and the creation of new resources are developed.
