Perceived Emotional Maltreatment Factors of African Americans in the Workplace

Pages 37-52 | Published online: 17 Oct 2008

Abstract

Although progress is gradually being made in the fight against discrimination in the workplace, African Americans encounter emotional maltreatment from unique experiences in hostile work environments. Emotional maltreatment on the job is beginning to be recognized as a cause of psychological problems people experience such as increased stress, poor morale, and many precipitate personnel grievances and even lower productivity. This article reports on the perceptions of college students about the unfair treatment of African Americans in the workplace. The study found that they perceive that African Americans in the workplace are treated unfairly with less promotion and job advancement opportunities. Symptoms of depression and anxiety often are perceived as a result of workplace discriminatory acts. Results of this study show that African American college students believe that emotional maltreatment frequently occurs and further causes depression and anxiety.
