Abstract
Older adults, those age 50 and over, have continually represented approximately 10-15% of all cases of AIDS reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition to those infected with HIV, many older adult caregivers are affected by HIV/AIDS. Despite these figures, social workers and other providers of health care are often unaware of the needs of these growing populations. Older adults with HIV/AIDS as well as those affected by the disease represent diverse backgrounds in gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and exposure to HIV. Additionally, older adults present special issues and challenges not always present in younger individuals with HIV/AIDS.
