ABSTRACT
The psychological test performance of 100 patients with traumatic head injury was eval u ated to determine the base rate of in valid response sets. Using combined actuarial criteria for the Minne sota Multiphasic Person ality Inventory-2 (Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989) and the California Verbal Learning Test (Delis, Kramer, Kaplan, & Ober, 1987), 11% of the sample was identified as having a likely in valid response set. None of these individuals had objective evidence for brain compromise, but they all had complicating premorbid (psychiatric or substance abuse history) or comorbid (litigation) factors. It is concluded that the possibility of invalid response sets needs to be explored routinely in all psychological evaluations of patients with traumatic head injury, preferably using multiple actuarial criteria.
