The Effect of Culture on Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment

A Study of Information System Managers in Nigeria

Pages 113-130 | Published online: 04 Oct 2008

ABSTRACT

Job satisfaction has received a great deal of attention in organizational research due to its significant impact on work attitudes such as organizational commitment, performance, absenteeism, and turnover intentions. Many organizations in Africa are plagued by poor performance, high turnover rates, and low productivity, largely due to the negative work attitudes of the workforce. Information technology (IT) is seen as one of the means to liberate the sagging African economies, and boost employees' morale, performance, and productivity. This paper investigates the effect of cultural values on job satisfaction and organizational commitment in Nigeria. Data were collected from 316 information systems managers in selected business organizations in Nigeria. Results of this study suggest (in support of many western studies) that cultural factors are positively and significantly related to job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Implications for management practice are discussed. doi:10.1300/J156v08n01_07
