ABSTRACT
This study examined the prevalence and nature of stressful life events and the impact of these events and related factors (mental health disorders, number of episodes of homelessness) on trauma severity among substance-abusing, homeless men. Data were collected at five substance abuse treatment agencies in the Southeast. Subjects (N = 99) completed the Stressful Life Events Screening Questionnaire and the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 and provided demographics information. Analyses revealed that the number of stressful life events and the presence of a co-occurring mental health disorder were both significant predictors of the severity of trauma symptoms. Findings suggest that treatment professionals working with this population should assess for stressful life events and trauma symptoms as part of a comprehensive approach to substance abuse treatment for homeless men.
