Chemical Dependency Counselor Supervisors' Perceptions of Supervisee Anxiety and Resistance in Clinical Supervision

Pages 39-49 | Published online: 12 Oct 2008

ABSTRACT

Substance abuse counselor supervisors (n = 54) were surveyed to examine their perceptions of anxiety and resistance reactions in their supervisees, how they responded to these reactions, and how these reactions impacted the supervisory relationship. Supervisors indicated that personal insecurity was the most common reaction, with discussing the issue the most common supervisory response. Implications for both conducting supervision and providing appropriate supervision training are discussed in light of the results.
