Abstract
The study of pets in families is an important scientific dimension, with a substantial body of research literature. This article presents a framework and theoretical basis for understanding human relationships with pets, using a life course perspective. Pets play an important role at each stage of the life-course. Research indicates that pets offer companionship, assist persons with disabilities, facilitate therapy, and play an important role in the bereavement process. Implications for Family Life Educators and a consideration for the inclusion of pets in the substance areas of teaching curriculums are presented.
