Summary
The first decade of the industrialization of behavioral healthcare provided several spectacular accomplishments as well as a number of unfortunate mistakes. Most disappointing was the industry's loss of clinical focus, resulting in managed costs rather than managed care. This industrialization followed the pattern seen in all previous courses of industrialization, except the schedule was greatly accelerated in keeping with the rapidity of the current information age. A number of predictions can be made as to the evolution of managed behavioral care, as this industrialization is still in its relative infancy. The practitioner who anticipates that managed behavioral care will simply go away and behaves accordingly will experience a dubious future.
