Abstract
Prior research has examined the detrimental effects of online affairs, often leading to marital neglect, estrangement, and possible divorce. However, little is known about the exact interaction between the Internet and couples, and how these virtual relationships influence marital dissolution. A framework to assess online affairs was developed that describes how spouses can idealize these virtual relationships, which can negatively distort perceptions of marital intimacy. Furthermore, this paper outlines counseling techniques for couples that integrate traditional and specialized interventions to improve communication and rebuild trust after an online affair.
