Tenth anniversary of Expert Opinion on Drug Metabolism & Toxicology

, PhD (Editor-in-Chief)

Expert Opinion on Drug Metabolism & Toxicology was established in 2005. Since its launch, the journal has provided readers with a portfolio of highly impactful literature on all aspects of absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination and toxicology (ADME-Tox) of human pharmaceuticals. The major goal of publishing this literature is to help prevent the surprise and negative impact of drug failures as well as mitigating the risks of toxicity by maintaining a source of superior scientific information for the journal’s readers. To fulfill its aims, the journal relies on state-of-the-art articles, which describe diverse and applied multi-disciplinary approaches. These papers advance our knowledge through expert review of fundamental research and they create innovative solutions that address the current practical problems related to ADME-Tox in the pharmaceutical sciences.

This year (2014) marks the tenth year of publishing high quality articles in Expert Opinion on Drug Metabolism & Toxicology. As we commemorate the last 10 years of brilliant content authored by prominent experts in the field, we also look forward to future issues of the journal.

Numerous attractive articles from the field have been published in the journal since its first issue in June 2005. The variety of article types published by the journal are reflected in its first issue; publishing full-length reviews, drug evaluations, perspectives, editorials, meeting highlights, original research and technology evaluations. All papers follow a well-structured format that facilitates readers to find content with ease; highlighting the expert analysis and opinion. Readers who wish to reflect on the 10-year history of the journal or simply want to pick up on the spectacular growth in the fields of drug metabolism and toxicology can do so in a relatively short time by browsing the content online. Articles published in the journal over the past decade have significantly increased our understanding of the pharmacokinetic profiles, the toxicological effects and the metabolic issues associated with specific drugs and drug classes. Importantly, as well, are a gamut of articles, which consider innovative technologies as investigative tools, and the application of these new approaches to support pharmaceutical research, safety science efforts, drug product development programs and regulatory science. To illustrate this point, Figure 1 (supplementary online) shows the most downloaded articles the past three years, the most frequently used title words and the geographic distribution of authorship for manuscripts. The journal performs a rigorous peer-review of all papers with the highest editorial standards. This process is carefully undertaken and produces timely and impactful expert- and evidence-based analysis. These articles, ensured to fit the aforementioned aims and scope of the journal, are crystal clear and have longevity for essential reading. Over its evolution, Expert Opinion on Drug Metabolism & Toxicology has been, and continues to be, devoted to ushering in the publication of the most exciting and cutting-edge advances and knowledge in ADME-Tox arena. The review articles and drug evaluations that are published span a wide-range of clinical and non-clinical studies that form an integral part of the life-cycle of human pharmaceuticals. As such, these articles have brought a high quality evidentiary base of information that have cemented the high stature of the journal. It has built a distinct reputation in the inter-disciplinary professions of pharmacology and toxicology that is firmly established.

To further mark the 10-year anniversary and drive forward the journal’s continued development, a themed issue is planned on the metabolism of anti-cancer drugs. This themed issue will bring with it a series of well-organized articles from leaders in the field that will be guest edited by Dr Godefridus Peters, one of our distinguished Editorial Board members.

As the Editor-in-Chief, I encourage readers to visit the journal’s website to access the latest science, discovery and innovation impacting ADMET-Tox in the pharmaceutical sciences. Readers will also access drug evaluations here, each covering clinical, toxicological and pharmacokinetic data on specific drugs. These evaluations span all areas of therapeutics and have increased our understanding of current strategies as well as opening our awareness to the challenges in human disease therapy. In looking back over the past 10-years, there is much to be proud of. Likewise, each year forward will live up to our expectations and beyond. The future is certainly bright given recent advances in human genomics and their relevance to personalized medicine. Progress is continually being made in deciphering population differences in metabolism and initiatives in the translational sciences are favorably impacting and modernizing toxicology. Being involved with the journal over the past 5 years, I’ve found it to be a primary engine of innovative information that can anticipate and keep up with the rapid shifts in the complex landscape of the pharmaceutical sciences.

Expert Opinion on Drug Metabolism & Toxicology is appreciative of the exceptional work of the authors who have contributed to the high impact scientific and medical information in the journal. This concrete content provides an information flow that has helped to forge the path of the journal’s success. We thank our committed peer-reviewers who ensure every article published is of the highest possible standard. It is also a pleasure to acknowledge and recognize the Commissioning Editors who have worked with the journal over the 10-year period and whose dedication and passionate work on the journal have been an essential part of its success; from planning and administrative logistics to journal content and promotion. In addition, the production and marketing staff at Informa Healthcare have been important in enabling the ease of accessibility of the journal. As Editor-in-Chief, I also wish to acknowledge a strong appreciation to the dedicated and distinguished Editorial board, which recently has expanded to ensure coverage of specialty topics and who provides critical input under the breadth of its sharp expertise. Finally, a heartfelt thanks goes to the Expert Opinion series publisher, Informa Healthcare, and of course you, the reader, who keep a finger on the pulse of the journal. Thus, we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Expert Opinion on Drug Metabolism & Toxicology full of enthusiasm and excitement as we look to the future!
