Abstract

Epithelial ovarian cancer is the leading cause of gynecologic-related cancer deaths. Mortality from this disease remains high owing to the lack of screening tools for early disease, resulting in a high percentage of patients diagnosed with advanced stages. The role of surgery to determine the extent of spread and to remove metastatic deposits has remained at the forefront of management. The majority of patients experience a complete clinical response after primary surgery and chemotherapy. Unfortunately, a high percentage of relapse remains, and treatment for recurrent disease has not achieved the success rates desired. Thus, scientific efforts have focused on improving current treatment and the use of biological/molecular agents. The focus of this review is to provide an overview of epithelial ovarian cancer and to discuss updates in the management of this disease.
