Women’s knowledge of pelvic floor disorders

Pages 471-477 | Published online: 10 Jan 2014

Abstract

Pelvic floor disorders are common conditions with increasing prevalence in aging women. Many risk factors, some of which are modifiable, can predispose women to pelvic floor problems. Women’s knowledge about pelvic floor disorders is lacking. Many barriers to knowledge acquisition exist, including ethnic and socioeconomic factors. Researchers have focused on evaluating educational workshops to enhance women’s knowledge. There is evidence to show that enhancing knowledge can prevent and also improve certain pelvic floor symptoms. A psychometrically valid questionnaire exists to quantify knowledge acquisition. Knowledge does not imply adherence; enhanced self-efficacy and frequent reinforcement seem to improve compliance and success of proposed interventions.
