The present study is devoted to the morphology, taxonomy and distribution of Coscinodiscus perforatus Ehrenberg and Coscinodiscus radiatus Ehrenberg. Coscinodiscus perforatus was erected by Ehrenberg on the basis of sediment material collected from Richmond, Virginia. Subsequently, several authors considered this taxon a synonym of C. radiatus. An examination of the type material of C. perforatus was carried out with scanning electron microscopy and a lecto- and epitype were chosen. The information obtained was substantiated and supplemented by examination of recent plankton material from Buenos Aires (Argentina) coastal waters. On the basis of these analyses the description of C. perforatus was emended and compared with the closely related C. radiatus.
