Current Perspectives in Dementia with Lewy Bodies

, &
Pages 461-472 | Published online: 24 May 2006

Abstract

Dementia with Lewy bodies is the second most prevalent of the neurodegenerative dementias and the published literature on this type of dementia has increased 30-fold over the last 10 years. This article will sum up some important aspects of this development, focusing on clinically relevant new information within epidemiology, advances in neuroimaging, genetics, clinical management, and diagnostic criteria and guidelines. Emerging evidence suggests that the clinical management of these patients differs from the management of other dementia patients, especially concerning drug treatment. Thus, identifying patients with dementia with Lewy bodies has important clinical implications.
