A Comparative Study of Intergenerational Mobility

Shanghai and St. Petersburg

Pages 16-27 | Published online: 08 Dec 2014

Abstract

Data from a sample survey carried out in 2008 in Shanghai and St. Petersburg comparing differences in intergenerational social mobility show that following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the scale of upward mobility between the generations in Russia declined. In Shanghai, however, a steady trend toward increased upward mobility was found. Differences in levels of industrial development and growth rates may be seen as the causes of this difference.
