Abstract

The human tectorial membrane was observed with the scanning electron microscope. Imprints were observed on the undersurface of the middle zone of the tectorial membrane in a configuration corresponding to the arrangement of hairs on the outer sensory cells, indicating the insertion of the sensory hair tips. the imprints were arranged not only in a single line forming a W shape (single imprint), but also in 2 or 3 lines (multiple imprint) in the human. Oblique SEM observation of the imprints showed that there was a slight elevation of the basal layer of the tectorial membrane bearing the imprints (W-shaped elevated zone). Furthermore, a deep hollow surrounded the imprints. the findings are discussed from a functional viewpoint.
