Abstract
The platelet factor 3 activity in platelet rich plasma was evaluated in a Stypven system and the influence of incubation time, platelet number and the addition of ADP and kaolin was estimated. The total lipid phosphorus content was measured and fractionation of the phospholipids was carried out by thin layer chromatography. The fatty acid and aldehyde composition of phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl serine, phosphatidyl choline and sphingomyelin was determined by gas liquid chromatography. Some variation in platelet factor 3 activity and in the absolute and relative content of the various phospholipids were observed within a group of 20 subjects. The fatty acid and aldehyde pattern showed more variation, however, the ratio between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids remained constant, and each of the phospholipids showed a characteristic fatty acid pattern. Correlation coefficients were calculated between platelet factor 3 activity and the absolute amount of the various phospholipid fractions and the amount of the main fatty acids. No distinct correlation could be established within this limited group of normal subjects.
