Do Hearing Aids Damage the User's Residual Hearing? (A literature survey)

Pages 99-105 | Published online: 12 Oct 2009

Abstract

This paper reviews' and evaluates the literature which deals with the effect of hearing aid use on the residual hearing of people. It concludes that there does not yet appear to be any scientific evidence that powerful hearing aids do or do not have a deleterious effect on the user's residual hearing. Caution is advocated, however, when recommending such hearing aids. Suggestions for future research into this topic are presented.
