Abstract
The effect of non-auditory variables on various speech tests of auditory function has been investigated. Both age and linguistic background have been shown to affect performance on a test involving the discrimination of filtered speech. In a second experiment, factors influencing the performance of three tests involving the presentation of competing information were examined. The SSW test was found to be influenced by the age of the subject, the SDL by memory span and visual sophistication, and the Jerger CM test by the personality of the subject.
