Corrigendum

In the Journal of Asthma 1999; 36(1) 115–128 for the article “Construction and validation of four childhood asthma self-management scales: parent barriers, child and parent self-efficacy, and parent belief in treatment efficacy,” the authors have noticed an error since publication.

Table 5 accurately documents that parent attack prevention self-efficacy was negatively correlated with age of the child (–0.17, p < .05), suggesting that parents become less confident in their ability to prevent an asthma attack in their child over time.

In error, the authors reflected this incorrectly in the text (on pages 121–122) that reads:

“One unexpected result was that parent attack prevention self-efficacy was positively correlated with age of the child. This suggests that parents become more confident in their ability to prevent an asthma attack in their child over time. This result, along with the finding that child attack prevention self-efficacy was not correlated with age of child (although it approached significance), underscores the importance of parental involvement in asthma attack prevention, even in the older child.”

The authors would like to correct this to read:

Parent attack prevention self-efficacy was positively correlated with age of the child. This expected result suggests that parents become less confident in their ability to prevent an asthma attack in their children as the children mature, thus becoming increasingly independent and having increasing responsibility for asthma self-management.”

The authors apologize for this error.
