Abstract

A new instrument for the detection of the post-auricular myogenic (PAM) response has been used to diagnose deafness in infants. One hundred and one infants underwent PAM testing before 2 years of age and underwent audiometry when of an age to perform reliably. Of 69 infants with normal PAM tests, all had adequate cochlear function for normal speech development. Thirteen infants with sensorineural deafness were detected amongst those with abnormal PAM responses. The PAM test as recorded by this apparatus is of value as a diagnostic and screening test in cases of suspected deafness.
