Abstract

Childbearing women have a high rate of psychiatric disorder and a high risk of suicide would therefore be predicted. This review assesses the evidence for a low suicide risk in postnatal and pregnant women, and by implication people of both sexes who have children, a phenomenon first commented on by Durkheim a century ago but rarely researched since then
