Abstract
The effects of electrical stimulation on muscle are not fully known. This review discusses the findings from some recent electrophysiological studies of human muscle in relation to functional electrical stimulation (FES) and emphasises the importance of considering muscle fatigue. Further laboratory and clinical studies are needed to provide a rational basis for selecting appropriate stimulation parameters when using FES.
