New Developments in Opioid Abuse Treatment

Abstract

Treatment for opioid dependence has become an urgent medical and public health concern due to infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) through addicts' sharing needles. This article, reviews three types of current treatments for opioid addiction: detoxification procedures; antagonist maintenance; and agonist maintenance. The medications associated with each type of treatment are reviewed, and implications for future developments in the field are discussed.
