THE AUTHORS
Manuella Adrian, M.Sc. Hyg., is a scientist, administrator, lecturer, public health researcher, and educator. She is a Research Associate, Department of Economics, University of Guelph, and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Master of Public Health Program, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Nova Southeastern University. Previously, she was Director of Research at the Kansas Health Institute, Topeka, KS; head of the statistical research program at the Addiction Research Foundation, Toronto, Canada; research economist/sociologist with Health and Welfare Canada, Ottawa, Canada; policy analyst with the Canadian Ministry of State for Science and Technology; and consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). She has been cross-appointed at Carleton University, Florida International University, and the University of Kansas. She is a member of the editorial board of Substance Use & Misuse, and a faculty member of the Middle Eastern Summer Institute on Drug Use (MESIDU) in Israel and the Middle Eastern-Mediterranean Summer Institute on Drug Use (MEMSIDU) in Italy. Research interests include: addictions, psychoactive drugs, population health, health behaviors, epidemiology, special populations, social costs, cost benefit/cost-effectiveness, measuring quality of life, healthcare financing and management, needs-based planning, evaluation and outcome studies, estimates of market size, and post-marketing surveillance of pharmaceuticals. Quantitative methods include research design, applied statistics, analyses of large databases, ecological studies, and multivariate techniques. She has over 250 professional publications, including over 20 books and monographs, some 20 book chapters, and about 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as newspaper articles and video scripts. She has spent the past several years starting and running a small volunteer cable-based narrow-casting TV channel, and has lately become interested in issues of governance.
