1 It is interesting to note the semantics, their implications and associated valences that have been created in the broad area of substance use and its interventions. Substance users, who represent a heterogeneous and not a homogeneous population, and who can be, and often are categorized pejoratively as “craving,” as part of their behavior, whereas non-users, who are not stigmatized have “desires.” Editor's note.

Carl Leukefeld

Carl Leukefeld, US, is a professor and chair of the Department of Behavioral Science and founding director of the Center on Drug and Alcohol Research at the University of Kentucky. He is also the Bell Alcohol and Addictions Endowed Chair. He came to the University of Kentucky in 1990 to establish the Center on Drug and Alcohol Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), where he filled administrative and research positions. He was also the chief health services officer of the United States Public Health Service. Dr. Leukefeld has published articles, chapters, books, and monographs. He has taught the undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. He currently has NIH funding, other funding, and is a grant reviewer. His research interests include treatment interventions, HIV prevention, criminal justice, and health services.
