Abstract
Objectives: The prognostic value of MMP-9 and TGF-β1 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is not clear. This study aimed to assess this subject.
Methods: After immunohistochemistry staining of 48 OSCC biopsies with MMP-9 and TGF-β1 markers, marker expression in the stroma was estimated, and the correlations with OSCC prognosis determinants were analyzed (α = 0.05).
Results: Mode of invasion was associated with metastasis (rho = 0.449, p = 0.008). MMP-9 was positively associated with metastasis and mode of invasion. TGF-β1 was negatively correlated to tumor histologic grade but was positively associated with metastasis.
Conclusions: Unlike TGF-β1, MMP-9 might be useful for prognosis determination.
