Abstract
According to nationwide surveys inhalant abuse is a form of substance abuse which occurs in up to 20% of US adolescents. However, there is little information about the context in which adolescent inhalant abuse occurs. This study presents case study accounts of inhalant abuse among a sample of incarcerated adolescents to illustrate common themes among adolescent users. These themes include disorganized family structure, witnessing or being a survivor of family violence, involvement in a delinquent lifestyle and concurrent poly-drug abuse. Strategies are needed to prevent or intervene in adolescent inhalant abuse.
