Abstract

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for monitoring plant toxins, especially cleistanthin B of the plant Cleistanthus collinus. Its suitability to handle different biomatrices was assessed through in vitro spiking experiments, and its applicability to study the biodistribution of toxins in rats following oral administration of an extract of C. collinus leaves was demonstrated. The capability of ELISA to detect metabolites enhances its potential for use in clinical and forensic toxicology. Key Words: Plant poison—Cleistanthus collinus—Penicillinase—Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
