Effect of metal exposure in rats: amelioration by diallylsulphide

Abstract

The effect of diallylsuphide (DAS) was investigated on mercuric chloride (HgCl2)-induced renal damage in rats. Oral administration of DAS (200 mg/kg) effectively inhibited the levels of antioxidant enzymes as compared to HgCl2-treated group. Exposure to HgCl2 also resulted in an increase in the uric acid, creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels. A significant decrease in the uric acid, creatinine and blood urea nitrogen was also observed in DAS-pre-treated HgCl2 group. The results suggest that DAS possesses significant potential as nephroprotective agent.
