Journal of Visual Communication in Medicine

It is pleasing to hear that in tribute to the great dedication Julie Dorrington showed to the Medical Illustration profession an award has been created in her honour. The award with be presented for the first time to the best ‘New Voices’ paper at this year's IMI Conference. An obituary for Julie is featured in this issue of the journal. It is people like Julie who enable our profession to continue at the pace that it does, those who give up their valuable time for little or no reward, and it is fitting that the Julie Dorrington award has been created to celebrate those brave enough to address their fellow professionals for the first time. The New Voices presentations at last year's IMI conference were of a very high quality. The speakers from last year have written about their personal experiences in the Viewpoint article of this issue. It is true that without contributions from such dedicated professionals the conferences, newsletters, regional, national and global meetings and, of course this journal would not exist. This peer-enriched learning which focuses on a collaborative learning approach encourages all to think about their own techniques and application, share their knowledge and experience and learn from one another.

With many in our profession facing an uncertain future, our associated institutes urge us to strive for Brilliance in Biocommunications and Value through Innovation & Effectiveness. Actually, the two go hand in hand as through demonstrating not only innovation and effectiveness, but also through demonstrating brilliance of conception and practical techniques, we can add value to the profession.

It is not just being brilliant, innovative and effective, it's about promoting and quantifying those achievements and developments in order to prove their worth.

For many of the more experienced members of the profession these challenges are not new and it is the associated institutes and this journal that constantly provide a platform to make this achievable.

“IMI is responsible for supporting the professional development and well-being of all our members and for upholding and advancing standards in clinical photography, video and design in healthcare. At the heart of our institute is the recognition that we must be relevant to and highly collaborative with our members and our internal customers, whilst reaching out to all potential new members. We take very seriously our accountability in supporting the best outcomes for patients through the excellent quality of the work that we do. We are about: accountability, supportiveness, continual improvement, and moral purpose. As a professional body, we are here to represent everyone who chooses a career within our profession and by joining our Institute; you too will have a voice in that future representation.”
