Abstract
The purpose of this article is to present the STEPPE Software Evaluation Checklist that is used as a screening instrument in a teaching-research computer laboratory for severely handicapped learners located in New York City. The article first outlines the four components that comprise a contemporary instructional technology. Next, the importance of “laptop” microcomputers as the fifth component of the instructional revolution is discussed. The article then sets forth a twenty-five item checklist developed in the STEPPE Lab to select educational software for use with this new technology. Finally, a number of software programs that rate highly on the checklist are recommended for users of the Apple or IBM computer.
