On the Electrophoretic Estimated Serum Proteins in Relation to the latex-test and Waaler's Test in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Summary

Electrophoretic estimation of serum proteins has been carried out in 299 cases of rheumatoid arthritis. The results are compared with the serological reactions, Waaler's test and the Latex test. The value of electrophoresis is chiefly the demonstration of high α₂-globulin in an early stage of disease. Only second comes the occurrence of high γ-globulin and low albumin in later stage of disease. Especially when the serological test are negative, the electrophoretic results will be of interest.

The possibility of an inhibitor effect in the α₂-globulins as explanation of the many negative tests combined with high γ₂-globulin is mentioned.

Zusammenfassung

Die elektrophoretische Bestimmung von Serumproteinen wurde in 299 Fällen von chronischem Gelenkrheumatismus ausgeführt. Die Ergebnisse werden mit den serologischen Reaktionen (Seroreaktionen), dem Waaler-Test und dem Latex-Test verglichen. Der Wert der Elektrophorese liegt hauptsächlich in der Darlegung von hohem α₂-Globulin in einem frühzeitigen Stadium der Krankheit. Nur an zweiter Stelle kommt hochwertiges γ-Globulin vor und in späterem Stadium erscheint niedriges Albumin. Besonders bei negativen serologischen Versuchen bieten die elektrophoretischen Ergebnisse ein grosses Interesse.

Die Möglichkeit einer Inhibitorwirkung in den α₂-Globulinen als Erklärung der zahlreichen negativen Versuche in Verbindung mit hohem γ₂-Globulin wird in Erwägung gezogen.

Résumé

Une estimation électrophorétique de protéines de sérum a été effectuée dans 299 cas de polyarthrite chronique évolutive. Les résultats sont comparés avec les réactions sérologiques, le test de Waaler et le test au latex. La valeur de l'électrophorèse consiste à démontrer la présence d'α₂-globuline à un stade primitif de la maladie. L'occurence de γ-globuline à haut pourcentage et d'albumine à faible niveau dans un stade avancé de la maladie ne vient qu'en second lieu. C'est spécialement lorsque les épreuves sérologiques sont négatives que les résultats électrophorétiques présentent un intérêt.

L'auteur mentionne finalement la possibilité d'un effet inhibiteur dans les α₂-globulines comme explication des nombreux tests négatifs en combinaison avec la haute concentration d'γ₂-globuline.
