Immuno-Electrophoretic Findings in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Summary

In a consecutively examined material of 69 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the immuno-electrophoretic pattern was examined in relation to a series of clinical and serological parameters. No correlation was found between the results of the immuno-electrophoresis and the clinical parameters. A relationship was found between IgM and the rheumatoid factor, and between IgA and SAT (streptococcal agglutination test). Furthermore, a relationship was found between the three immunoglobulins and the activity of the disease as measured by the ESR, and between IgM and proteinuria. In addition, a relationship was found between the immunoglobulins and the relative gammaglobulin value as shown by paper-electrophoresis. Immuno-electrophoresis, however, does not appear to provide more or better information than the serological investigations conventionally employed in rheumatoid arthritis.

Résumé

Dans un matériel examiné consécutivement de 69 patients souffrant de polyarthrite chronique évolutive, la structure immuno-électrophorétique a été analysée en relation avec une série de paramètres cliniques et sérologiques. Les auteurs n'ont trouvé aucune corrélation entre les résultats de l'immuno-électrophorèse et les paramètres cliniques. Un rapport a été constaté entre IgM et le facteur rhumatoïde, et entre IgA et SAT (streptococcal agglutination test). En outre, une relation a été trouvée entre les trois immunoglobulines et l'activité de la maladie mesurée par ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) et entre IgM et la protéinurie. De plus, les auteurs ont trouvé un rapport entre les immunoglobulines et la valeur relative de gammaglobuline montrée par papier à électrophorèse. Toutefois, l'électrophorèse ne semble pas donner une meilleure information que les investigations sérologiques employées conventionnellement dans la polyarthrite chronique évolutive.

Zusammenfassung

In einem hintereinander untersuchten Material von 69 Patienten mit kronischer Gelenkentzündung wurde das immuno-elektrophoretische Bild in Zusammenhang mit einer Anzahl klinischer und serologischer Parameter untersucht. Es wurde keine Korrelation zwischen den Ergebnissen der Immuno-elektrophorese und den klinischen Parametern festgestellt. Eine Beziehung zwischen IgM und dem Rheumatoidfaktor, sowie zwischen IgA und SAT (streptococcal agglutination test) wurde ebenfalls gefunden. Ausserdem fanden die Verfasser eine Beziehung zwischen den drei Immunoglobulinen und der Krankheitsaktivität, die durch ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) gemessen wurde, ferner zwischen IgM und Proteinurie. Weiterhin wurde eine Beziehung zwischen den Immunoglobulinen und dem relativen Wert des Gammaglobulins entsprechend der Papierelektrophorese festgestellt. Dennoch scheint die Elektrophorese nicht mehr oder bessere Auskunft zu verschaffen als die in der kronischen Gelenkentzündung allgemein benutzten serologischen Untersuchungen.
