Blurring the Distinction between Tacit and Explicit Knowledge

Abstract

Knowledge, both tacit and explicit, is an important component of the decision making process. Knowledge-based systems research has concentrated on explicit knowledge and has found knowledge acquisition to be a major bottleneck. Knowledge management research has stressed the importance of tacit knowledge but offers few technological solutions for its identification and transfer. Ripple Down Rules offers a simple way of directly acquiring knowledge from a domain expert. The type of knowledge captured by Ripple Down Rules is not distinguished as tacit or explicit because the knowledge acquisition technique does not rely on the expert to specify what they know. Instead, knowledge is captured in action as the expert exercises their knowledge while interacting with concrete cases. Others can utilise the knowledge by executing the rules or they can develop and compare models to internalise the knowledge using such techniques as formal concept analysis.

Les connaissances tacites et explicites jouent un rôle important dans la décision. La recherche sur les systèmes à base de connaissance s’est concentrée sur les connaissances explicites et a montré que l’acquisition des connaissances est un goulet important. La recherche sur la gestion des savoirs a insisté sur l’importance des connaissances tacites mais offre peu de solutions pour l’identification et le recueil de ces connaissances. Les règles "par vagues descendantes” permettent d'acquérir de façon simple des connaissances du domaine. Les connaissances acquises par les règles par vagues descendantes ne distinguent pas les connaissances tacites ou explicites, parce que la technologie ne repose pas sur les spécifications des experts. Au contraire, la connaissance est acquise en action lorsque les experts exercent leur savoir sur des problèmes concrets. D’autres peuvent utiliser les connaissances en exécutant les règles ou ils peuvent développer et comparer des modèles pour capturer les connaissances à l’aide d'une technique comme l’analyse formelle de concepts.
