An observational study of convective cloud streets

Abstract

Satellite pictures and radiosonde information are used to study occasions of cloud streets over the British Isles. Their average aspect ratio and alignment are investigated and the most favourable synoptic pattern for their occurrence identified. In common with the work of Kuettner (1971), a curved wind profile is found to favour streets, but his explanation of its origin, that of a decreasing geostrophic wind with height, is not confirmed.
