In most cases of gout, classic clues like monoarthritis of the great toe, a pattern of recurring attacks, and characteristic tophi make diagnosis straightforward. When its presentation mimics that of other rheumatic conditions, however, misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment could impact negatively on both patient morbidity and cost-effectiveness of care.
