Reflex sympathetic dystrophy

Timely diagnosis and treatment can prevent severe contractures

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is characterized by persistent pain associated with trophic and vasomotor changes in and around a joint, usually to a degree that is disproportionate to the extent of injury. These symptoms, however, are consistent with those of many other clinical entities. How, then, are timely diagnosis and treatment achieved? In this article, Dr Lopez reviews this condition, describes a typical case, and recommends diagnostic and treatment options.
