, MD, MPH

PREVIEW

The risk of osteoporotic hip fracture can be reduced by using a combination of therapeutic strategies. A preventive program that effectively combines a bisphosphonate, calcium supplements, adequate vitamin D intake, and appropriate attention to exercise and to hazards in the patient's environment can significantly reduce the incidence of hip fracture and associated morbidity and mortality. In this article, Dr Fiechtner discusses nonpharmacologic preventive measures and various drug therapies as well as ways to gauge the effectiveness of treatments.
