Abstract
Bioenergy generated from either macro- or micro-algal biomass is a high-profile topic for both academics and companies. The Algal Bioenergy Special Interest Group is a 2-year initiative in the UK funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Technology Strategy Board, tasked with increasing awareness of ecosystem services of algae for the production of bioenergy and bio-based products. One of the major outputs of the Algal Bioenergy Special Interest Group has been the production of a strategic research agenda highlighting the major environmental opportunities and challenges in this field.
