Muskingum-Cunge: A Practical Alternative to the HYMO VSC Method for Channel Routing

Abstract

This paper describes the Muskingum-Cunge channel routing method as presented in the new version (5.2) of the Guelph Agricultural Watershed Storm-Event Runoff (GAWSER) model, a hydrologic modelling program based on the popular HYMO format. The Muskingum-Cunge method is a simple procedure that uses measurable channel characteristics (e.g. valley cross-sections) to compute the routing coefficients. It has been applied to the entire Grand River Basin in southwestern Ontario with accurate simulation of flood flows for a wide range of channel conditions.

Cette étude présente la méthode de traçage des canaux Muskingum-Cunge telle qu’elle est décrite dans la dernière version (5.2) du système d’écoulement pluvial dans le bassin hydrographique et agricole de Guelph (GAWSER), programme de modélisation hydrologique conçu à partir d’un format très connu, HYMO. La méthode Muskingum-Cunge utilise simplement les caractéristiques mesurables des canaux (par exemple, coupe transversale des vallées) afin de calculer les coefficients du traçage. Elle a été appliquée à l’ensemble du bassin de la Grande rivière du sud-ouest de l’Ontario en simulant des débits de crues dans une gamme étendue de configurations de canaux.
