Nomenclature of population groups in Southern Africa

  • Thus, I. Schapera , in his authoritative study, The Khoisan Peoples of South Africa ( 1930 ), could write, “All Bushmen are of the same racial stock, and have fundamentally the same culture, just as their languages are essentially related” (p. 37 ).
  • During the sixties, when Monica Wilson and Leonard Thompson were preparing the first volume of their important Oxford History of South Africa , they were confronted with the same conflicting systems of nomenclature
  • This view gained concrete expression in the Preface to Volume I of the Oxford History , where Wilson and Thompson state
  • Already the three biological labels — San, Khoikhoi and South African Negro —have gained wide acceptance and are used in a number of books such as et al. et al., The Distribution of the Human Blood Groups , (2 ed.) , and periodicals such as the American Journal of Physical Anthropology and the South African Journal of Medical Sciences. It is our hope that the set of names agreed upon at the 1971 Johannesburg Conference will become standard usage.
