Nicoll's ‘theological meteorology’ typifies the world-view found in most of the diaries consulted for this article—all written by devout Covenanters. In The Diary of Alexander Brodie, 1652–80, Spalding Club, Aberdeen, 1863, the entry recording the downpour of January 22nd, 1656 (p. 173) provides a quaint example of this cosmology: ‘I saw how great a God He was that did hang up thes botls [sic] above, and squeiz [sic] them forth upon our heads at his pleasure’.
