Three autobiographical manuscripts by Ernst Mach

Pages 401-418 | Received 27 Feb 1978, Published online: 22 Aug 2006

  • The best evidence for Mach's attitude is probably his flat opposition to an intended Festschrift for his 70th birthday, which forced Wilhelm Jerusalem to give up the idea altogether. See Jerusalem Wilhelm Gedanken und Denker: neue Folge Vienna 1925 28 28
  • In addition to Mach's autobiographical manuscripts there exist many comments on his childhood in his Analysis of sensations and other publications, his sister Marie's anonymously authored autobiography Erinnerungen einer Erzieherin Vienna 1913 and his correspondence in the Ernst-Mach-Institut in Freiburg im Breisgau. There are also numerous informative family documents in the hands of Frau Anna Karma Mach in Vaterstetten, Bavaria. There are even published articles and unpublished manuscripts by Mach's father, Johann. For more exact particulars see the Bibliography and index of my book on Mach.

  • See Herneck Friedrich Wiener Physik vor 100 Jahren Physikalische Blätter 1961 17 455 461 This includes a very early letter by Mach. • These works include the first English translation of Mach's Erkenntnis und Irrtum und the title Knowledge and error Dordrecht 1976 and the following articles: Elie Zahar, ‘Mach, Einstein, and the rise of modern science’, British journal for the philosophy of science, 28 (1977), 195–213; and in the same issue Michael R. Gardner, ‘Relationism and relativity’ (pp. 215–233). There are two more articles in Peter K. Machamer's and Robert G. Turnbull's Motion and time space and matter (Columbus, 1976), namely, Erwin Hiebert, ‘An appraisal of the work of Ernst Mach: scientist-historian-philosopher’ (pp. 360–389), and Laurens Laudan, ‘The methodological foundations of Mach's anti-atomism and their historical roots’ (pp. 390–417). The yearly series Historical studies in the physical sciences, 7 (1977), also contains two articles with substantial discussions on Mach: Tetu Hirosige, ‘The ether problem, the mechanistic world view, and the origins of the theory of relativity’ (pp. 3–82); and Stanley Goldberg, ‘Max Planck's philosophy of nature and his elaboration of the special theory of relativity’ (pp. 125–160). For bibliographies of other work by and about Mach one should turn to Joachim Thiele's incomparable article ‘Ernst Mach: Bibliographie’, Centaurus, 8 (1963), 189–237; and more recently Alfonisna D'Elia's interesting ‘Recente bibliografia Machinana’, Rivista critica di storia della filosofia, 3 (1975), 189–203.
  • In addition to my own extensive discussion of Mach's rejection of atoms and atomism in my book, the reader would be well advised to consult the following as well: Brush Stephen Mach and atomism Synthèse 1968 18 192 215 F.
