In this article I try to explain in detail why Marx and Engels regarded the science-based materialism of Vogt, Büchner and Moleschott as ‘vulgar’ materialism, and how they distinguished their own historical materialism from it. This article was prepared before Gregory's book appeared, and I would now evaluate certain aspects of the scientific materialists' thought in a slightly modified way. In particular, I underestimated their humanistic politics, and exaggerated their hostility to scientific speculation
