  • Hopkins , William . 1838 . Researches in physical geology . Trans. Cambridge Phil. Soc. , 6 : 9 – 9 .
  • Hopkins , William . 1839 . Researches in physical geology . Phil. trans. Royal Soc. London , 129 : 381 – 423 . 130 (1840), 192–208; 132 (1842), 43–55.
  • Hopkins , William . 1852 . On the causes which may have produced changes in the earth's superficial temperature . Quart. journ. Geol. Soc. , 8 : 56 – 92 . part I
  • Beckinsale , Robert P. 1972 . “ Hopkins, William ” . In Dictionary of scientific biography , Vol. 6 , 502 – 504 . New York : Charles Seribner's and Sons. . Hopkin's deductions ‘… that the most probable cause of changes of climate during geological time was the influence of alterations in the various configurations of land and sea and in ocean currents’, as Beckinsale points out, ‘were already held by Lyell and others, but none had hitherto expressed the details in precise mathematical terms’ (p. 503).

  • Cannon , Walter F. 1960 . The uniformitarian-catastrophist debate . Isis , 51 : 38 – 55 . Cannon regards Hopkins as a leading theorist of the catastrophist school (p. 44).
  • Brush , Stephen G. 1979 . Nineteenth century debates about the inside of the earth: solid, liquid or gas? . Annals of science , 36 : 225 – 254 . Brush points out that Hopkins rejected the uniformitarian school of thought and adopted the ‘progressionist’ position ‘that the slow cooling of the earth, imposes a long-term irreversible trend on geological processes’. Brush maintains that Hopkin's arguments against a thin crust, ‘later refined and amplified by Thompson, … had considerable impact on geological thought’ (p. 231).
