Hypothesis and experiment in the early development of Kekulé's Benzene theory

  • Kekulé was relating this anecdote immediately following the very similar story of the rise of the structure theory on a London omnibus. The most recent discussion of the latter is Rocke A.J. Subatomic Speculations and the Origin of Structure Theory Ambix 1983 30 1 18 In telling both stories he implied that he had often seen such visions.

  • After the publication of this paper and its German version, the only other time he used the unembellished hexagon was on two pages of the 1866 fascicle of his Lehrbuch (II, 672 and 744). In only four later papers, and never again in his textbook, may any sort of hexagonal structures be found Kekulé II 610 610 615, 658, and 763; the dates are 1869, 1872, 1873, and 1884).

Klüver and Müller attempt, in my opinion unsuccessfully, to show that the development of the benzene theory cannot be analysed in Kuhnian or Popperian terms.
